A Brief History Of Priory Ruins Cricket Club

The idea for forming PRCC emerged one wet September Sunday afternoon in 1990 (probably after one beer to many!) The three founder members, James Browne, Paul Gower and Iain Mayhew were disillusioned with the way that their current club was being run, and wanting to be able to enjoy friendly cricket without the hassles and problems of a large club, decided to form PRCC.

Batsman The original idea was to be a wandering side but we were fortunate to find the lovely ground at Roeheath, South Chailey. After discussions with the local parish council (and strangely, objections from one of the other local cricket teams) we were given permission to take over the ground.

The ground had not been used for six years and needed a huge amount of work (even finding the original square was a problem!) Work progressed throughout the winter and included rebuilding the old score-box which was to be used as a joint changing room for both teams. During this time a number of players were invited to join, and all but one decided to. We knew at this stage that our idea for the club was a popular one.

The first game arrived and it rained! Our thanks go to Henfied CC who were prepared to play all afternoon in the pouring rain to enable us to play our first ever game. We even managed to win! The next day we discovered that we had marked the wicket wrongly and were playing on 24 yards rather than 22!

Ball We managed to purchase a dis-used portable building which we gradually converted into a very pleasant pavilion. Every year something was added, or a wall knocked down until the current building existed. A new changing room has been built for visitors, water has been connected and neighbour James Usbourne kindly allows us to connect to his electricity supply.

PRCC has come a long way since our first year. Players have come and gone, Club Presidents have come and gone but throughout it all we have tried to maintain our policy of providing a good standard of cricket which is enjoyable to play.

Enjoy.......!
